Common Fears About Brand Photography & How to Overcome Them
For so many business owners, the idea of booking a brand photoshoot feels… uncomfortable.
I hear it all the time:
“I hate having my photo taken.”
“I don’t know how to pose.”
“I won’t look like myself.”
And I get it. You didn’t start your business to be in front of the camera. But here’s the truth – your brand photos don’t need to look staged or overly polished. They just need to feel authentic.
Let’s break down these fears and how to overcome them.
Fear #1: ‘I Hate Having My Photo Taken’
Why this happens:
Many people feel uncomfortable in front of a camera because they’ve had bad experiences in the past – maybe an awkward school photo or a stiff corporate headshot that didn’t feel like them. That discomfort sticks with you, making photoshoots feel like something to avoid.
How to overcome it:
Work with a photographer who makes you feel at ease. A good photographer (like me!) won’t just point a camera at you and expect magic to happen. I’ll guide you through the entire process, help you feel comfortable, and make sure you actually enjoy it.
Think of it as a conversation, not a photoshoot. Instead of standing stiffly and waiting for the camera to click, imagine you’re chatting with a friend. The more relaxed you feel, the more natural your photos will look.
Shift your mindset. Rather than thinking, “I have to get my photo taken,” try saying, “I get to showcase my brand in a way that feels authentic.” These photos aren’t for anyone else – they’re for you and your business.
Fear #2: ‘I Don’t Know How to Pose’
Why this happens:
Most of us don’t spend our days practicing poses in the mirror (unless you’re a model, and if so, lucky you!). When a camera is pointed at you, it’s easy to freeze up and overthink every little movement –
Where do I put my hands? Do I smile? Do I look at the camera?
How to overcome it:
Forget the word “pose.” Instead of stiff, unnatural poses, I encourage movement – walking, adjusting your hair, holding a coffee cup, or even laughing mid-conversation. The best shots happen when you’re doing something natural to you, not just standing still.
Use props that make you feel at home. If you’re a designer, bring your laptop. A coach? Hold a notepad or your favourite coffee mug. These small actions help you feel more like yourself, which makes for more natural photos.
Trust your photographer. I’ll give you plenty of direction so you’re never left wondering what to do with your hands. It’s my job to guide you into movements that feel good and look effortless.

Fear #3: ‘I Won’t Look Like Myself’
Why this happens:
If you’ve ever had a photo taken that made you think, That doesn’t even look like me, it’s understandable that you’d be nervous about brand photos. Many people worry about looking too staged, too polished, or just… off.
How to overcome it:
Keep your hair, makeup, and clothing natural. Wear something you love that makes you feel like you. If you never wear a blazer, don’t force yourself into one just because it feels “professional.” Your brand photos should reflect your real personality.
Choose a photographer who understands your brand. Every business is unique, and your photos should be too. I take the time to learn about you, your brand voice, and your audience, so the final images truly feel like you.
Focus on energy, not perfection. The best brand photos capture the energy and emotion behind your business. A genuine smile, a thoughtful expression, a confident stance – these are the things that make an image powerful.

Fear #4: ‘I don’t know what to wear.’
Why this happens:
The pressure to find the “perfect” outfit can make brand photos feel overwhelming. You want to look polished but still like yourself, and the last thing you need is an outfit that makes you feel uncomfortable.
How to overcome it:
Wear what makes you feel confident. Don’t go out and buy a completely new wardrobe for your shoot – stick with outfits that you already love and feel great in.
Think about your brand colours. If you have a signature colour that appears in your branding, consider incorporating it subtly into your outfit. This helps create a cohesive look across your website and social media.
Layer up. Adding a jacket, cardigan, or scarf makes it easy to switch up your look without a full outfit change.
